What can you do to help reduce air pollution?
Travel
Before using your car, ask yourself:
- Do I really need to make this journey?
- Could I walk or cycle instead of taking the car?
- Could I take a bus or train?
If you must drive:
- Drive smoothly. You'll save fuel, and your engine will emit less pollution.
- Don't rev your engine unnecessarily.
- Maintain your car: keep the engine properly tuned and the tyres at the right pressure.
- Try to combine your journeys.
- Try to reduce commuting by using car pools (e.g. Travelshare-Essex Scheme)
- Try to avoid driving during peak hours and on congested roads
At Home
- Try not to have bonfires - compost or recycle instead. Never burn plastic or rubber.
- Buy water-based or low-solvent paints, varnishes, glues and wood preservatives.
- Avoid burning solid fuels if possible.
- Use energy efficient appliances
- Improve home insulation
