EssexWorks: Increasing Recycling for a Greener Essex CHOOSE 2 REUSE A GREAT SUCCESS SWAPPING EVENTS WILL NOW TAKE PLACE MONTHLY

Due to the success of the Choose2Reuse event held in Chelmsford last week, Essex County Council, in partnership with Essex Community Reuse & Recycling Network (ECORRN) is planning to make them a monthly occurrence.

The Choose2Reuse event was held at the public square in County Hall on Tuesday 21st October, giving residents the opportunity to experience the benefits of swapping quality goods as an alternative to buying new.

The event proved to be popular, with a large number of items being received, including:

  • 91 books
  • 175 items of clothing
  • 71 homeware items
  • 23 toys
  • 201 items of recorded media (including CDs, DVDs, cassette tapes and computer games)

Karen Ives from Braintree said, ‘what a brilliant idea Choose 2 Reuse Tuesday is.   I came with shoes and went home with a coat, what could be better than that?’

Any leftover items which weren’t swapped on the day were donated to the Oxfam charity shop on Market Road who will help find them new homes.

Feedback from the event was very positive, with many visitors asking if they could be made a regular occurrence. Essex County Council has responded to this request, and Choose2Reuse events will now be held at the public square in County Hall on the first Tuesday of every month, starting on 2nd December.

County Councillor Tracey Chapman, Cabinet Member for Environment & Waste said: “I am delighted that Choose2Reuse Tuesday was such a success.

By exchanging and reusing we are keeping down levels of waste which, if we are unable to recycle, would end up in landfill.

We have listened to the positive comments from residents, and now Choose2Reuse Tuesdays will be taking place once a month. This will give more residents the opportunity to swap their unwanted goods rather than throwing them away.”

Choose2Reuse Tuesday will take place outside Chelmsford Central Library in the public square between 10am-3pm on the following dates:

2nd December 2008

6th January 2009

3rd February 2009

SHOP ECO WITH FREE REUSABLE BAG

A new reusable shopping bag provided by Essex County Council will help you cut down on the number of plastic carrier bags you use when you go to the shops.

The handy foldaway bag has been designed to raise awareness of Shop Eco, Essex County Council’s guide to a greener lifestyle. The guide is packed with useful advice on how you can produce less rubbish and save money doing so.

SHOP ECO WITH FREE REUSABLE BAG

By using the free Shop Eco bag you can cut down on the number of carrier bags you use. The average person uses 290 carrier bags a year, most of which are made from polyethylene, a non-degradable plastic that can take hundreds of years to break down.

Essex residents can request a free Shop Eco bag by sending an email to wastemanagement@essexcc.gov.uk, including your name and address. They will be given away on a first come, first served basis.

The Shop Eco guide, which was launched last year, features 32 full-colour pages and contains lots of useful information on how you can shop for a green lifestyle by buying fresh, local food and more durable and environmentally friendly products.

To request a free copy of Shop Eco, call 0845 6037625 or visit www.shopecoguide.co.uk. You can also download it in PDF format from the website.
